I really struggle with icon / logo design! Find myself using icon freebies. The metalab example is a fantastic example of simple UI design! love it!

This is an interesting article that shows the importance of icon / logo design, which I think relates strongly to what you have been discussing:

I can totally understand that mate, I'm just loving how blogging more starts to build up your site with more and more content, in an interesting and different way than perhaps portfolio work does. It's nice to build up an archive of articles rather than adding and replacing work constantly!

Thanks T!

I've been doing a fair bit of icon design at work lately, and it occurred to me a couple of weeks ago to get some thoughts down on the blog about it. This part is obviously aimed more at the theory side of icons, but the next part will look at how to come up with ideas for icons, and how to execute them.

I promise I'll get quicker at the blogging too...I've just been so busy!!

Excellent article, mate - looking forward to reading the second part of it. I really agree with what you are saying about consistency, especially regarding Windows 7. I use a custom icon pack for all my folders etc. which really is a massive boon in navigating the veritable cornucopia of files!

@Jon:

Most of our stuff is based on our own custom CMS, but there are occasionally hand-coded bits, and most of the templating work is done manually. I learn a lot about PHP from our guys, they're all really knowledgable about it and have been able to help me with the occasional query! I do very much want to learn it properly myself, in time.

For my local setup I just use XAMPP to hand-code the .php files, works a treat!

Yeah, I remembered suddenly that I hadn't uploaded an avatar yet, so I got on it...:)

@Tony:

Yeah a film blog sounds cool, there's certainly a lot to discuss about the state of cinema at the moment :D

(Who'd have thought all these Elgin boys would turn out to be such geeks...:D )

PHP isn't as bad as I thought it would be... takes a while to get your head around it but after spending a bit of time on it you start to know what to look for when editing CSS etc.

Also I have had a Gravatar account for 6 months and never even set it up because I have never been a pro-active blogger, but with my new blog now finished I am going to start blogging about film in terms of design, something different from bob's blog but hopefully something people might be interested in!

It's definitely a good thing!!!

See you got the hang of Gravatar's though! Yeah I mean WP is fine if you can get your head around PHP! I'm only just starting out custom themes. What I've been doing at the moment is customizing others themes, but now that I've started creating my own i'm really getting the feel for WP.
Yeah nobody writes their own jQuery really, there's no need because everyone releases their jQuery under GPL licence anyway which awesome. I have written my own image slider component before but that was in xml controlled using ActionScript which was a little easier than javascript.
What do you do in your work when it comes to web? Is it custom coded or do you use CMS systems?

Yeah I can't wait to see more content up here.

I have a local version of my site that i work from at the moment, using easyphp, i have like a working almost code snippet gallery, i have my old flash components that iw as gonna give away as freebies but think they need rewritten and got some tutorials half written for like installing wordpress on iis server and dealing with domain forwarders etc. Can't wait to have a fully up and working site
